When to Toss your Makeup/Au Revoir Products!

Hello ladies!

I recently decided to do some "summer" cleaning concerning my makeup collection. --Every so often I like need to toss the products that I've had far too long.

Here are some products that have unfortunately gone to the makeup graveyard..
You may be wondering, how do you know when to toss your makeup?

I go by the shelf life.. see below
This symbol indicates that this product has a shelf life of 9 months once it's been opened/used. It will usually appear on the box of the product or the back of the product itself.

To keep better track, I've started writing down the date I first use a product as well as the shelf life!

General guidelines

Mascara 2-3 months up to 6 months
Liquid Liner 3 months Pencil Liner 2 years
Powder Eyeshadows 2 years
Cream Eyeshadows 6-12 months
Lipstick 6 months (natural lipsticks such as 100% Pure) --up to 2 years
Lip gloss 12 months to 2 years
Lip liner 2-3 years
Concealer 6-12 months
Powder 2 years
Foundation 12 months

If your makeup begins to separate (see Hard Candy Glossaholic above,) begins to have cracks (see elf Mineral Primer above) or changes in color, texture or scent it's most likely time to toss it!

It's very important to not use old makeup, especially mascara because it can cause eye infections, and styes (which are never fun!)

Do you follow the shelf life on your makeup?

  1. It's so hard to let go of a colour you love, even if it's expired! I've totally taken your advice on writing down the expiry dates of things in my journal and will try my hardest to stick with it!

    1. I know! I'll usually just add that color to a wish list to re-purchase later on if it's something I know I'll miss. :)

Thanks for taking my advice!!! I hope you'll find it helpful. :)

  2. Good advice & yes I follow the guidelines with the open lid logo, it's not worth the risk of rashes & infections for the sake of beauty :)

  3. You are so organized! I never throw away makeup exactly when I'm supposed to... Although if something changes texture or scent or separates (and isn't a product that normally separates), I toss it! Sometimes I keep things just for sentimental value, even if it's too old to use :)

    1. Thank you Sarah! I'm usually not as organized, but I have so much makeup now that it's actually good to toss some! :)

I have some things for sentimental value as well.. like some of my first palettes!

  5. I try to stick to the 6mth rule with my mascaras because of bacteria etc but I am guilty of keeping (hoarding) my other beauty products for way too long. However if anything starts to crack, separate or just looks or smells funny then it's definitely Sayonara!!

    1. Besides the shelf life I usually toss mascaras sooner anyway because they either change formula once they've been opened for a while OR I get bored of them!

Definitely time to toss for any of the reasons you mentioned!

  8. I regularly clear out my unused old makeup. I feel bad sometimes because there are some that I am no where near finished, but I always tell myself its better to be safe than sorry ^_^

  10. I really don't care about the supposed shelf life of a product because I never had an allergic reaction - or worse - so far *fingers crossed* and I'm able to tell when a product is not good anymore.
